Sacred Space
Sacred space refers to places or realities where God’s presence uniquely dwells among His creation, and especially among His people.
Throughout the story, God’s purpose includes dwelling with humanity, and sacred space becomes a primary way this purpose is revealed. What makes a space sacred is not the location itself, but the presence of God and the alignment of that space with His character, authority, and purposes.
Because God is holy, His dwelling requires alignment with what is good, pure, and uncorrupted. Human rebellion, sin, and the defilement associated with death threaten sacred space, which is why the story repeatedly shows God establishing, guarding, purifying, restoring, and expanding it so that His presence may remain among His people.
Within this framework, sacred space functions as the environment of covenant relationship, where God dwells with His people and they live under His authority. Its maintenance is closely connected to practices of purification and atonement, which address impurity and preserve the conditions necessary for God’s dwelling.
This theme begins in Eden, develops through the tabernacle and temple, and reaches a decisive turning point in Jesus the Messiah. In Him, God’s presence is no longer centered in a place but revealed in a person. Through His work, the reality of sacred space is redefined and expanded.
Through the Holy Spirit, the presence of God extends into the community of believers, no longer confined to specific locations but dwelling within His people. The story ultimately culminates in the renewed creation, where God dwells fully with His people and His presence fills all things.
