The Reign of Jesus

The reign of Jesus the Messiah describes His present and ongoing rule as the risen and exalted Lord, through which God’s purposes are advancing within the world.

Following His resurrection, Jesus is enthroned with authority over heaven and earth. His reign marks the beginning of a new stage in the story in which the victory He has accomplished is now being worked out within creation.

His reign is not merely future but present. Though the world continues to experience sin, corruption, and death, Jesus now rules as the true King, and all authority belongs to Him.

Within this present age, His reign advances through the proclamation of the gospel, the formation of His people, and the work of the Holy Spirit. Those who belong to Him live under His authority and begin to share in the reality of His reign even as they await its full manifestation.

His reign will ultimately be revealed in its fullness when all opposing powers are brought to an end and death itself is finally destroyed, completing the work that began with His resurrection.

Purpose Connection

The reign of Jesus advances God’s purpose to dwell with His creation in the present. As the risen and exalted Messiah, He exercises authority over all things, and through His reign, the reality of restoration begins to take shape within the world as it moves toward its fulfillment.

Why This Matters

Understanding the reign of Jesus clarifies what is true of reality in the present.

Jesus is not only the one who has acted in the past or will act in the future—He is the risen and exalted Messiah who now reigns with authority over all things. His rule is not distant or postponed, but active within the present age.

This reshapes how we understand the world.
Reality is not ultimately defined by chaos, human authority, or opposing powers, but by the reign of Christ.
Though the effects of sin and death remain, they do not determine the final authority over creation.

This shapes how we live.
Life is not lived independently or under self-rule, but under the authority of the risen Messiah.
To follow Jesus is to live in allegiance to His reign—aligning our lives with His authority and joining in what He is doing within the world.

This also creates tension.
His reign is real, but not yet fully revealed.
We live in a world where His authority is established, even as its full expression is still unfolding.

Understanding the reign of Jesus therefore leads to allegiance—living under His authority in the present while anticipating the day when His reign is fully realized.
