Walking by the Spirit

Walking by the Spirit describes the ongoing life of responding to and being guided by the Holy Spirit in the present age.

Because God dwells within His people through the Spirit, life is not lived independently or sustained by self-direction. Instead, it is lived in continual responsiveness to His presence—marked by attentiveness, trust, and alignment with His leading in everyday life.

This walk includes growing awareness of the Spirit’s work. Believers learn to recognize how God is shaping desires, directing thoughts, and prompting alignment with His character. Over time, this awareness develops into discernment, as they become better able to recognize what reflects the Spirit’s leading and what does not.

Walking by the Spirit also involves dependence. Life under the reign of Jesus is not sustained by human effort alone, but through ongoing reliance on the Spirit as the source of life, strength, and direction. This dependence is not passive, but responsive—choosing to trust, to yield, and to follow as He leads.

This walk is continual rather than occasional. It includes both direction and restraint, as the Spirit leads toward what is aligned with God and opposes what is not. Within the present age, this creates tension, as the pull of competing desires remains even as the Spirit actively forms and directs life.
