Dependence on God

Dependence on God describes the posture of recognizing one’s need for God and relying on Him as the source of life, strength, and direction.

Because humanity is created and sustained by God, life is not meant to be lived independently of Him. Dependence acknowledges this reality, rejecting self-sufficiency and recognizing that life, growth, and faithfulness are not produced by human effort alone.

This dependence is expressed through continual reliance on God in both ordinary and difficult circumstances. It shapes how one approaches decisions, responds to challenges, and understands personal limitations. Rather than striving to control or secure life independently, dependence turns toward God as the one who sustains and directs.

Dependence on God is not weakness, but alignment with reality. It reflects a restored understanding of humanity’s place within creation—living as those who are sustained by God rather than as those who exist apart from Him.

This dependence is closely connected to life in the Spirit, through whom God actively works within His people. As a result, dependence is not passive, but responsive—engaging life while continually relying on God’s presence and work.

Dependence on God therefore represents a defining posture of life before Him—living with continual reliance on Him as the source of life and strength.

Purpose Connection

Dependence on God reflects the restoration of humanity’s reliance on its Creator. As God’s purpose moves toward dwelling with His people, dependence expresses the reality that life is sustained by Him, preparing His people to live fully in His presence where that dependence will be complete and uninterrupted.

Why This Matters

Dependence on God reshapes how we understand strength, control, and self-sufficiency.

If life is sustained by God, then it cannot be lived independently of Him. This challenges the tendency to rely on personal ability as the ultimate source of stability or success.

Dependence brings freedom. It releases the burden of trying to control everything and allows life to be lived in reliance on God’s presence and work.

It also reframes weakness. Rather than being something to hide or overcome completely, weakness becomes a place where dependence is expressed and God’s strength is made evident.

At the same time, dependence does not remove responsibility. It leads to active engagement with life, but with an ongoing reliance on God rather than on self.

Ultimately, dependence on God aligns life with reality. It recognizes that life is not self-generated, but sustained by God, and is therefore lived best in continual reliance on Him.
