The theological system within Searching Theology

The theological system within Searching Theology is an effort to understand and organize the meaning of the story the Bible tells.

The story itself is the governing structure. It unfolds from creation to new creation, revealing who God is, what has gone wrong in the world, and how God is restoring His creation. All theological conclusions must arise from and remain accountable to this story.

Scripture serves as the primary witness to this story, providing the account through which God has made Himself and His purposes known. Through its writings, the structure of the story is preserved and made accessible, forming the foundation for all theological understanding.

The story begins with God and His purpose

At the foundation of the story is God, the uncreated Creator of all things, who made the world good and formed humanity to live in relationship with Him and to represent His rule within creation.

Humanity exists within both the visible world and an unseen realm of spiritual beings, all under God’s authority.

From the beginning, God’s purpose is to dwell with His creation—and specifically with His people. Creation itself is designed as the place where His presence would be known.

This purpose is disrupted through rebellion

This purpose is disrupted through rebellion—both human and spiritual. Humanity turns from God, and sin, corruption, exile, and death enter the world. These realities are not isolated but interconnected, shaping the condition of creation and opposing God’s purpose.

Yet God does not abandon His creation. Throughout the story, His actions consistently reflect His character. He is loving, gracious, merciful, just, holy, patient, and faithful.

As He acts within the story, His character is made known—His glory revealed as His presence, authority, and goodness are seen within creation. Because of who He is, He opposes what destroys His creation while also acting to restore it.

God’s restoring work unfolds within the story

God’s restoring work unfolds progressively within the story. Through covenant, He forms a people. Through sacred space, He dwells among them. Through atonement and the ongoing expression of His mercy and forgiveness, He addresses sin and impurity. Through judgment, He confronts evil. Through deliverance and protection, He actively rescues, sustains, and preserves His people and His purposes within a world still shaped by opposition.

These works are not isolated acts but coordinated expressions of His purpose to restore His dwelling with His creation.

This restoration reaches its turning point in Jesus

This restoration reaches its decisive turning point in Jesus the Messiah. Through His faithful life, willing death, resurrection, and exaltation, He confronts and overcomes the realities introduced by rebellion—sin, corruption, death, and the powers.

His resurrection inaugurates the new creation, and His exaltation establishes His reign over all things. In Him, the way is opened for humanity to be restored to life with God.

Life now unfolds under His reign by the Spirit

Following His exaltation, the Holy Spirit is poured out. Through the Spirit, God’s presence now dwells within His people, forming and empowering them to live in the reality established by the risen Messiah and under His reign.

Salvation is therefore understood as living in the reality of the life established through Jesus the Messiah and under His reign. It is not merely a change in status but a new reality grounded in His resurrection.

This life begins through faith and continues through faithfulness, as people respond to God in light of the revelation they have been given and enter into life with the risen Messiah.

The people of God live under His reign

Through union with Christ, believers share in His life, His victory, and in the reality that God has shown Him to be the true Messiah. Justification describes being recognized as belonging to the Messiah whom God has confirmed, and transformation describes the new life that emerges as believers are shaped by the Spirit.

This life is lived within the present age, where the effects of sin, corruption, and death remain, resulting in both real experience of new creation life and ongoing growth in faithfulness.

Those who belong to Christ form the people of God in the present age—the community gathered around the risen Messiah and living under His reign.

This people extends across the entire story as those who respond to God in faith and faithfulness in light of the revelation they have been given, from the earliest faithful individuals to those united to Christ in the present age.

In the present age, this community is expressed as the Church, which lives under His reign and lives out His mission.

The mission flows from God’s purpose

The mission of the people of God flows from God’s purpose within the story. They bear witness to the reign of Jesus, proclaim the good news of His kingdom, and embody the life that flows from the risen Messiah within a world still marked by corruption and opposition.

The kingdom of God refers to the reign of God exercised through Jesus the Messiah—already present but not yet fully realized.

The story moves toward fulfillment

The story ultimately moves toward fulfillment. This includes the final judgment, where God addresses sin, reveals truth, and reveals and affirms what is faithful. In this judgment, His grace is upheld and the reality of each life is made known. All humanity is raised and judged, including those who belong to the Messiah.

It also includes the full restoration of creation. Death is finally destroyed, and creation is renewed. The people of God—those who belong to Him across the story and those united to Christ—are raised into embodied life and fully live in the life of the new creation under His reign.

The story reaches its goal

At the center of this fulfillment is the complete realization of God’s purpose: God dwelling fully with His people in the renewed creation.

The system remains accountable to the story

All understanding remains partial, all systems remain limited, and all conclusions must remain accountable to the story the Bible tells.

Medium Version

The theological system within Searching Theology seeks to understand and organize the meaning of the story the Bible tells.

That story unfolds from creation to new creation and is governed by God’s purpose to dwell with His creation, and specifically with His people. Humanity was created for this purpose, but through human and spiritual rebellion, sin, corruption, exile, and death entered the world, distorting life and disrupting relationship with God.

God does not abandon His creation. Because of who He is—loving, gracious, merciful, just, holy, patient, and faithful—He acts within the story to restore what has been disrupted. As He acts, His character is made known within creation—His glory revealed as His presence and authority are seen in what He does. Through covenant, sacred space, atonement, judgment, deliverance, and protection, He preserves His people and moves the story toward restoration.

This work reaches its decisive turning point in Jesus the Messiah. Through His faithful life, willing death, resurrection, and exaltation, He confronts and overcomes sin, corruption, death, and the powers. His resurrection inaugurates new creation life, and His reign establishes His authority over all things.

Through the Holy Spirit, God now dwells within His people, forming and empowering them to live in the reality established by the risen Messiah and under His reign. Salvation is therefore living in this reality—beginning through faith, continuing through faithfulness, and grounded in His resurrection.

Through union with Christ, believers share in His life, His victory, and in the reality that God has shown Him to be the true Messiah. This new life is lived within the present age, where the effects of sin and death remain, resulting in both real experience of new creation life and ongoing growth in faithfulness.

The people of God are those who respond to Him in faith and faithfulness in light of the revelation they have been given. This people extends across the entire story—from the earliest faithful to those who are in Christ—and is presently expressed as the Church, which lives under His reign and shares in His mission.

The story moves toward fulfillment in final judgment and full restoration. All humanity is raised and judged, and the people of God are raised into embodied life, fully living in the new creation where death is destroyed and creation is renewed.

At its center, the story resolves in the complete realization of God’s purpose: He dwells fully with His people.
